A smart upgrade for your home
We’re upgrading nearly 1.5 million water meters across Yorkshire. Smart metering will support in reducing leakage and water use, protecting water resources for the future.
Smart water meters accurately measure how much water you use, 24 hours a day, sending readings to us every 6 hours.
They’ll also let you monitor your usage and help you keep an eye out for leaks. Once the new meter connects, you’ll be able to see the meter readings online through your online account.
When will you get a smart water meter?
Everyone in Yorkshire who has an eligible water meter (installed pre-2022) is being upgraded to a smart water meter. Large parts of South Yorkshire were upgraded in 2025.
Our map shows the upgrades that we've completed or planned so far.
If your town or city isn't on the map, don't worry! All remaining areas will be upgraded from 2027.

What do you need to do?
If we're in your area
Indoor meters
If you’ve got an indoor meter installed before 2022, we'll contact you to book an appointment. If we’re in your area but you haven’t heard from us, please call us on 01274 299220.
Outside meters
As long as we can get to the existing water meter, you won’t need to lift a finger. We’ll call round to let you know what we’re doing, but don’t worry if you’re not home.
If we can't get to your meter (eg. if the gate is locked) we’ll leave a note explaining why we couldn’t do the work and reschedule it for another time.
If you have a medical need and are water dependent, we'll contact you to book an appointment at a time that's best for you.
If we're not there yet
Get ready for your smart meter
We need to make sure we have the most up-to-date contact details for you so we can get in touch when the time is right. The best way to do that is by setting up an online account - this will also help you monitor your water usage when the smart water meter is fitted.
How does the installation work?
1. On the day
The meter technician will have a lanyard and ID card. Your water will be turned off briefly and the meter will be exchanged. This usually takes under 20 minutes.
If the meter is inside, the meter technician will arrive during your appointment window. They'll need access to your bathroom or kitchen, where the meter is located.
If the meter is outside, the meter technician will knock on your door when they're working in your street. They might need access to your garden.
2. Get connected
Our Itron and Diehl smart water meters use the latest technology to protect your water usage data and the wider network.
When the smart network is available in your area your smart meter will automatically connect to it. You don't need to do anything. We'll get in touch to let you know once you are connected.
3. Log in to see your usage
Once you’re connected you'll be able to log in to your online account to see how much water you are using. This helps you stay in control of your bill, allows us to find and fix leaks quickly and supports everyone in saving water.

"Your colleague was in and out within 10 minutes and was very efficient. No mess, water off, water back on. Great"
Yorkshire Water customer responding to a survey in 2026 after their meter upgrade
Want further savings?
Alongside our partners Aqualogic, we can offer you the chance to save more money once your smart water meter has been fitted.
Aqualogic can visit your property and check whether you have any leaks. If you do, they will fix simple issues for free and advise on other solutions if the situation is more complicated.

Any questions?
I rent my home. Do I need my landlord’s permission to replace my smart water meter?
If you rent your home and it already has a water meter, it can be upgraded to a smart water meter. You do not need your landlord’s permission. Water companies have legal rights under the Water Industry Act 1991 to access your property when needed. This includes installing, checking, reading, repairing or replacing your water meter.
Will I get a display to show how much water I use, like my energy smart meter?
No, smart water meters don’t come with a separate display but once you are connected to our smart network you can see the data in your online account. If you don’t already have one you can create an online account.
What happens to my bill after I get a smart water meter?
There will be no change to how often you receive your bill.
Having a connected smart water meter helps us send you a more accurate bill because it uses actual meter readings instead of estimated ones. If your smart water meter can’t send us readings for any reason, we may need to estimate your bill sometimes.
Your bill will come as normal at the same time as before. The only changes will be that you can see your water usage on the online account, you can also view and pay your bill here too.
Do I still need to send in meter readings?
No, you don’t need to send us meter readings. Your smart water meter sends the readings automatically.
Who do I contact if I have a question about my smart water meter that is not answered here?
You can contact us on 01274 299220 and we’ll be happy to help you.
What information does a smart water meter collect?
We only collect information about how much water flows through your smart water meter. If you’d like to know more about the information we collect and how we use it, you can read our smart water meter data policy.
I’m moving into a home with a smart water meter. Do I have to use it?
Yes, if your home already has a smart water meter, you will need to use it. Homes built after 1990 already have water meters, and all new homes built from 2023 have smart water meters fitted. If you’re worried about paying your bill, you might be eligible for support.
What postcodes have you visited already?
What do I do if you've already been to my area but I don't have a smart meter yet?
If we've already been in your area and your water meter hasn't been upgraded to smart yet, give us a call on 01274 299220 and we'll see if we can install one.
If you don't have a water meter at all yet, you can request a meter and we'll install a smart meter.
