Mains replacement scheme underway in West Bowling

Yorkshire Water is underway with a £1.2m project in West Bowling, Bradford, which will replace 8.8km of mains with the aim of improving the reliability of drinking water supply, reducing leakage, and preventing water mains bursts in the area. 

The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region over the next five years. 

8.8km of mains will be replaced across Newton Street, Manchester Road, Ripley Street, New Cross Street, St Stephens Road and Gaythorne Road across an eight-month period. 

The West Bowling scheme is the latest mains replacement project to start in Bradford, with work currently taking place in Bingley, Keighley and Thornbury. Schemes have been completed in Fagley, Laisterdyke, Oakworth, and Lower Wyke. 

Scott Gammon, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “As part of Yorkshire Water’s largest ever investment into its infrastructure, we are delivering a significant upgrade to our clean water network. We’re targeting the areas that are most prone to leaks and bursts, and this means a huge amount of work taking place in Bradford. 

“The wider £406m project will help us to deliver the quality and reliability of service that our customers across Yorkshire expect, with loss of supply and disruption much less likely going forward.” 

Local residents have been informed of any disruption.  

Scott added: “We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.”  

Contract partners Sapphire Utility Solutions and Yorkshire Water are working with the local highways team to plan the full programme of works.
