Yorkshire Water will begin work to replace and move a section of its water main in Stannington, on Monday 9 January.

A fitting on the water pipe was dislodged in December and at around the same time local gas supplies were impacted by water entering a gas main. There will be an independent investigation into the cause of the incident, the impact on the gas main and the response to it.

Yorkshire Water and its partners will replace the current pipe with a section of new pipe that will be laid on a slightly different route further away from the gas main.

Initial work will take place on Bankfield Lane and Sheldon Road. During this period, Sheldon Lane will be closed around our working area. A section of The Rose and Crown pub car park will be used to maintain access for residents of Sheldon Road during the closure. While we’re working on Bankfield Lane we’ll need to use traffic lights on its junction with Highfield Rise.  Access for residents will be maintained throughout. All businesses will remain open as usual.

This initial work will determine the route of the new water main and we will continue to keep customers updated throughout the project.

Neil Dewis, director of water at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re working to replace a section of our water main in Stannington which had a fitting dislodged in December. We are removing a length of pipe for analysis and a new water pipe will be installed away from the gas main, which was laid after the water pipe was in place. Our work to move the pipe away from the gas main is in accordance with best practice.

“So that we fully understand the cause of the issue, there will be an independent investigation carried out. Once it has concluded we’ll update our customers and stakeholders on the outcomes.

“There will be some road closures in place while we carry out work to move the pipe which will begin with a series of trial holes to assess where all other utility apparatus is in the area. We’re working closely with Sheffield Council highways to make sure disruption is kept to a minimum and we are in the process of providing residents who are directly impacted by the work with detailed information.

“We know this has been a difficult period for our customers in Stannington and Hillsborough, and we would encourage anyone who hasn’t already applied for compensation, to do so via our website.”
