Yorkshire Water is due to lay 1km of clean water pipes and invest almost £1 million  to support  the redevelopment of the south of Leeds city centre.

Planned developments in Holbeck will add 29 commercial and 3,011 domestic properties on to the water network over the next couple of years. Yorkshire Water’s investment in new pipework will build resilience in the network to accommodate the new properties.

Working closely with Leeds City Council highways team, the scheme will be carried out in three phases. Yorkshire Water’s capital partners, Morrison Utility Services and Naylor Utilities, will start work on Monday 14 December.

The first phase will see a short closure of the junction of Holbeck Lane and Springwell Street, for the team to investigate the ground conditions and locate any other utilities in the area.

This will be followed by work on Whitehall Road to install the new mains pipe – the road will be closed while this work is carried out.

Installation of a new mains pipe on Globe Road, which will require it to be closed to traffic, will complete the work in early 2021.

John Shanks, project manager at Yorkshire Water said: “New developments and more people in the area will ultimately increase the demand on our network. The work we’re carrying out is an investment in the future water supply for Leeds city centre, to ensure we can service our customers and meet demand for many years to come.”
