Yorkshire Water is urging customers in Shafton to be vigilant and look out for friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable to bogus callers.

The warning comes after a report of conmen gaining access to a home by pretending to be Yorkshire Water workers.

Yorkshire Water’s Mel Tattersfield said: "We know that unscrupulous people do attempt to gain access to peoples’ homes by claiming to be from Yorkshire Water or ‘the water board’.

"We are currently carrying out work in the Shafton area, so it’s important residents remain vigilant at this time to prevent opportunist thieves. All our staff wear a uniform and carry photo identity cards which they're happy to show.

"If a caller claims to be from Yorkshire Water, put the chain on the door before opening it and ask to see their identity card and why they're visiting. If you're at all unsure and wish to double check the caller's identity call us before letting them in.”

Yorkshire Water offers a free password scheme for people who want to add an extra layer of protection and peace of mind that callers are genuine.

Mel added: "Customers can also arrange for our employees to use a password - simply let us know your chosen password and we'll make sure all our employees use it when visiting a property or calling.”

To set up a password, customers can call 0800 1 38 78 78.
