Meter Location

New build properties

There are various options available for the location of domestic water meters for newly constructed domestic properties.

Since 1990, every newly built property requires the installation of a water meter. From 1st April 2010, we have implemented a policy meaning that all newly installed water meters are capable of being remotely read. This eliminates the need to gain entry to the property to obtain a reading and offers more choice to where the meter can be installed.

As a result we have reviewed the policy for new build properties, aiming to provide customers with more choice in regards to water meter location, thus allowing safer and greater access to the home owner.

Wall Mounted Box Installation

• Water Meter is installed within a WRAS approved meter box that is mounted to the external wall of the property by the Developer

• We will install an external boundary control in the footpath in most instances, however if the property directly fronts the highway and the point of entry for the supply pipe is within 2m of the connection point, a boundary control will not be required.

• The service pipe must be laid in a continuous un-jointed length to the boundary of the property

• The pipework must be laid in accordance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulation 1999 and Yorkshire Water’s installation guidance document

• The maintenance of the Wall Box shall be the responsibility of the home owner

• The maintenance of the water meter shall be the responsibility of Yorkshire Water
