Thorne
We’re working in Thorne investing £2 million to replace around 2.9km of clean water pipes. Our water network in Thorne has had 36 bursts over the last 3 years, this work will reduce the risk of the bursts, maintain water quality and most importantly keeping customers pipes flowing.
Our contract partners United Living and Geraghty’s are carrying out this work on our behalf. Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 8am until 5pm, we expect to be completed by mid-November 2024.
Due to the nature of the water network, we must complete the work around town in a certain way and sequence to make sure the pipes are properly cleaned and chlorinated before we can switch flows between pipes. This sometimes means there are times when no one is working, this is while pipes are tested, and results are confirmed.
We know roadworks are inconvenient and we’re working closely with Doncaster Council on our traffic management plan to look at ways to minimise disruption. We really appreciate everyone’s patience and support while we complete these essential works.
We’ve completed over 70% of the work and have replaced old pipes on these following streets.
- Plantation Road
- Fair Tree Walk
- Orchard Street
- The Green
- Finkle Street
- Godfrey Road
- Bellwood Crescent
- Lock Lane
- Ellison Street
Horse Fair Green: As you’ll be aware an unmapped culvert was found and this delayed our project as we’d to redesign our scheme and work around the culvert.
We’ll be completed here by the end of next week which will include a full width reinstatement of the carriageway. Once completed our team will move over to Field Side to help speed up the works on this section of road.
Field Side and Field Road
Our work on Field Side is progressing from west to east towards King Street.
The old water main which is still in operation has been beset by further bursts which has meant some of our work has had to stop whilst these are repaired to ensure customers and businesses clean water supplies are maintained.
Work was completed overnight Thursday 19 September to abandon a section of this old pipe and divert customer and business supplies on to the new pipe we’ve laid to reduce the risk of further bursts.
King Street and Silver Street
Earlier this week, commencing 16 September, we started work on the final phase, working from the junction of Ellison Street and Bridge Street, along Silver Street and towards King Street.
As explained in my last letter this would help complete the works sooner but we’d need to closely monitor the impact on traffic.
We worked closely with Doncaster Council highways department and found that this work was causing delays and issues for large vehicles and buses and so stopped the work here.
Work on Silver Street
We’ve worked hard with the highways team to find alternative ways to progress this scheme.
As a result from week commencing Monday 23 September, we’ll start a second team to excavate and lay the new clean water pipe on Silver Street between Bridge Street and Church Street: 30 metres north of where we were excavating previously.
