Mains replacement scheme starts in Burngreave
7/14/2026
Yorkshire Water has begun a £2.6m mains replacement scheme in the Burngreave area of Sheffield as part of a wider £406m investment into replacing 1,000km of water pipework across Yorkshire by 2030.
5.5km of ageing clean water pipework will be replaced on Carlisle Street and the surrounding areas over the duration of the project, which contract partners Sapphire Utility Solutions are expecting to finish in summer 2027.
The project is one of many underway in Sheffield, including at Loxley Road, and Heatherfield and Northfield areas. A project is already complete in Norton Woodseats.
Scott Gammon, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “As part of Yorkshire Water’s largest ever investment into its infrastructure, we are delivering a significant upgrade to our clean water network, prioritising the areas that need it the most.
“Our water mains in Burngreave are prone to leaks and bursts, which can be inconvenient and frustrating for customers, so this is a vitally important scheme which will help us to deliver the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect – loss of supply and disruption should be much less likely going forward.”
Localised disruption is being communicated with nearby residents and businesses.
Scott added: “We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.”
The £406m investment in renewing clean water mains across the region forms part of Yorkshire Water’s £8.3bn programme of work to improve customer service and improve its infrastructure by 2030.
