Yorkshire Water has begun a £1.8million project to upgrade equipment at the Ecclesall Road and Granville Road combined storm overflows (CSOs) in Sheffield.

The investment includes installing new mechanical screens, kiosks and control panels and upgrading mechanical and engineering instrumentation. All of the improvements will result in improved performance of the sites.

Yorkshire Water has worked closely with Sheffield Council highways teams to carry out the work during school summer holidays, to minimise disruption as much as possible.   The utility is contacting residents and businesses to keep them updated about the ongoing works.

Lumi Ajayi, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Investing in our storm overflows is an important part of improving the resilience of our network.  This scheme will help ensure the system continues to operate effectively during periods of heavy rainfall.”

Contract partners, Galliford Try, will be completing the work on both storm overflows by the end of August.

Lumi added: “Combined storm overflows act as an important relief valve during periods of heavy and prolonged rainfall, stopping wastewater backing up into homes and gardens.  We’ll work as quickly as we can and we’d like to thank the local community for their patience whilst we carry out this important maintenance and performance upgrade.”
