£1.5m mains replacement scheme starts in Snainton
10/5/2026
Yorkshire Water is underway with a £1.5m mains replacement scheme in Snainton, near Scarborough, in a drive to reduce bursts, leaks, and supply interruptions in the area.
Contract partners, United Infrastructure, will be replacing 3.7km of clean water mains across Snainton and neighbouring Ebberston with flexible and more durable plastic piping. The project has begun on Barker’s Lane and will work towards Lairs Lane, with pipework also due to be replaced on Middle Lane, High Street, and Lairs Crescent.
Once the scheme is complete – in spring 2027 – bursts, leaks, and supply interruptions will be much less likely.
The project is one of many mains replacement schemes taking place across Yorkshire as part of a £406m programme between 2025 and 2030. Since the beginning of the programme, Yorkshire Water has replaced almost 300km of pipework – nearly a third of the overall 1,000km ambition.
The utility is prioritising aging pipework in areas prone to bursts and supply interruptions.
Nichola Fairbairn, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “The project in Snainton follows several other mains replacements across North Yorkshire, with work finished in Grassington, Bedale, and Settle, to name a few. We’ll be working quickly and doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.”
Local residents have been informed of any disruption.
The mains replacement scheme is part of Yorkshire Water’s £8.3bn investment programme to improve infrastructure, customer experience, and environmental impact.
Nearby, in Scarborough, Yorkshire Water is investigating and planning a multi-million-pound transformation of the wastewater network, in a bid to improve the water quality at the coast.
