Yorkshire Water starts work next week with an £827k investment to replace 2km of clean water pipes in Penistone, Cubley and Oxspring.

The mains renewal project is set to improve reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage and prevent water main bursts in the area.

Contract partners, Galliford Try start on site on Wordsworth Avenue, Penistone on Monday 28 April before moving on to Mortimer Road and Chapel Lane the following week.  From there, work will progress down to Hartcliffe Road in mid-May for approximately ten days.

Phase two will start on Oxspring Road week commencing 19 May before moving on to Long Lane for around three weeks.  It will then progress to Roughbirchworth Lane for around four weeks before finishing on Cross Lane.

Shaun Chapman, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re undertaking large-scale upgrades to our clean water infrastructure and prioritising assets that will benefit most from mains renewal, in areas prone to disruption, bursts and supply interruptions.  Barnsley and south Yorkshire have been identified as priority areas in our five-year plan to invest £406m to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across Yorkshire in the next five years.

“Over the next two years we’ll be replacing over 20km of Barnsley’s clean water network with durable, flexible mains, built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations.  We’d like to apologise to residents and road users for any disruption but this important work will result in a more reliable service with fewer bursts or supply disruptions to our customers.”

Yorkshire Water has worked closely with Barnsley Council Highways Department throughout the planning process for this work. For the safety of residents, road users, and colleagues, there will be closures to sections of the footpath and road during parts of the work.  Temporary road closures and signed diversions will be in place throughout.
