Rowell Bridge sees £607k investment in mains replacement

7/21/2025
Work starts this week to replace 1.7km of clean water pipes at Rowell Bridge, Loxley, Sheffield.
The £607k mains renewal is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region over the next five years. The clean water mains replacement work will improve the reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage and help to prevent bursts occurring in the area.
Contract partners, Sapphire Utility Solutions (SUS) and RWB are on site from Monday 22 July, starting at Rowell Lane, before moving onto Storrs Lane and finishing on Lee Moor Lane. This part of the mains replacement scheme should be completed by September 2025.
Scott Gammon, project manager, Yorkshire Water, said: “This is one of a number of schemes across Sheffield to provide a resilient and robust water mains network and represents our largest network investment of the last two decades.
“Our mains replacement work is focussed on areas where we have experienced more frequent bursts to be replaced with a more resilient network that, that can withstand some of the changing weather conditions and reduce the risk of this happening in the future.
“Sheffield is a priority area for this important investment, and we have identified 18 mains renewal schemes planned for the city over the next two years to replace over 43km (43,360m), including Heathfield, Cobnar Road and Loxley Road.”
Work on site has coincided with the school holidays to keep traffic disruption to a minimum and Yorkshire Water and its partners has worked closely with local authority highways teams to make sure that the correct traffic management is in place to keep everyone safe.
