New signs that encourage visitors to exercise mindfulness are due to be rolled out across Yorkshire Water reservoir sites ahead of World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10th October.

The signs explain that “Mindfulness is about being in the present. It means slowing down and noticing what is going on around you. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking, it can help relieve stress, anxiety and calm your thoughts” and gives an example of a mindfulness exercise for visitors to try.

Of the new signage, Zoe Burns-Shore, director of customer experience at Yorkshire Water said: “We know our customers are facing difficult and potentially stressful situations and visiting our fantastic reservoirs can be a great way to unwind.

“We’ve placed these new signs at particularly beautiful and relaxing spots around popular walks, in the hope they will encourage visitors to stop and be completely in the moment for a little while.”

Sites will include: Top Hill Low, Fewston, Langsett, Digley, Ogden, Brayton Barff, Embsay and Thruscross reservoirs.

As an employer, Yorkshire Water runs mindfulness sessions for its colleagues and has over 1,600 mental health first aiders, who have been trained to support colleagues with their mental wellbeing. Internally, the company runs several mental health initiatives and will host two speakers that focus on mental health and wellbeing, ahead of World Mental Health Day.

If you see one of the signs, enjoy a moment of mindfulness and if you feel like it, share it on social media and tag Yorkshire Water - @YorkshireWater.
