Lower Wyke mains replacement scheme enters second phase

6/2/2025
Yorkshire Water has completed the first phase of its £355,000 project to replace 1.1km of water mains in Lower Wyke, Bradford, and is beginning the second phase today (Monday 2 June).
The mains are being replaced to improve reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage and prevent water main bursts in the area. The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region over the next five years.
Phase one saw contract partners Sapphire Utility Solutions complete mains renewals between St Mary’s Square, St Mary’s Drive and St Mary’s Avenue.
Phase two, starting on Monday 2 June, will see pipework replaced on Huddersfield Road and Bradford Road. Work will begin at the junction of Huddersfield Road and Whitehall Road, and will progress down onto Bradford Road, finishing by Highfield Avenue.
For the safety of residents, road users, and colleagues, temporary traffic management will be in place around the working area, which will move as work progresses and will be manned during peak hours.
Shaun Chapman, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “So far we’ve replaced just over 600m of mains in the Lower Wyke area as part of this project – and in phase two we will replace the remaining 500m. We’re on track to deliver the scheme, which will help us to deliver the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect, in August.”
“We’ll continue to work quickly and do everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum.”
Seven further mains renewal schemes are either underway or planned in Bradford this year alone – resulting in a total of 16.1km of new, resilient, pipework for the city.
