Yorkshire Water is set to begin a £6.5m project to replace approximately 13km of water mains in the villages of Monk Fryston, Hillam, and Beal, on Monday 15 September, to improve the resilience and reliability of the area’s network.

The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region as part of its £8.3bn investment in infrastructure over the next five years. In North Yorkshire, more than 90km of pipework will be replaced in the first year alone.

Alex Spivey, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Replacing the mains in Monk Fryston, Hillam, and Beal, will improve the reliability of drinking water supply and prevent water main bursts, helping us to deliver a better service for our customers in the area. It’ll also reduce the likelihood of leakage, which is particularly important after such an extended period of dry weather.”

Contract partners M Group will begin work in Monk Fryston on Monday 15 September on Main Street, where pipes will be replaced between the junctions with  Austfield Lane and Water Lane. Temporary traffic lights will be in place around the working area, which will move as the project progresses, for the safety of residents, road users, and colleagues. This section of the work is expected to complete in mid-November.

There is additional work planned for Water Lane and Lumby Hill, and residents will receive information on traffic management once confirmed.

Alex added: “We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work. We thank everyone in the area for their patience.”

Work will also be taking place in Hillam and Beal, subject to permits.

This project is the latest mains replacement scheme to start in North Yorkshire with many already underway, including around the villages of Thirn, Bedale and Well, Hauxwell and Hunton, Levisham, and Grassington.
