Water quality concerns in area

Updates for customers who found particles in drinking water in Marton cum Grafton and Lower Dunsford  (YO51 and YO26)

Last updated: 07/08/26 13:55

Some customers in Marton cum Grafton and Lower Dunsforth (YO51 and YO26) have seen flakes and particles in their water. Since this was reported to us, we have been investigating the cause and testing the water. These particles were identified as Manganese, which causes visual changes in the water. At these levels, Manganese does not have any public health implications.

Water quality

Our latest water quality tests show that the water meets our public health standards, and we have not issued advice telling customers not to use/not to drink their water.

We know the visual changes to the water may be concerning and we are flushing across the area to bring these levels back to our usual high standards.

Cause of particles and what we're doing to resolve it

Based on our investigations so far, we believe that the issue has been caused by disturbance of historic metallic deposits within the pipework that have become dislodged.

We are flushing the network to clear these particles and get everything back to normal as quickly as possible. We are doing this flushing area by area, so it will take a few weeks.

Please see the map below for when we will be flushing each area:

Light green - Week beginning: 3rd August,

Dark green - Week beginning: 10th August

Yellow - late August/September following the other zones.

Using your water

Particles in your water supply can often be cleared by allowing the first incoming cold water tap to run for five minutes. If you need water for drinking or cooking, please follow this advice:

  1. Run the first incoming cold water tap for several minutes (this will usually be your kitchen tap).
  2. Fill a jug and leave it to stand until any sediment has settled to the bottom.
  3. Pour the clean water from the top of the jug for you to use.
