We’re spending £1.5million to replace the clean water pipes on Pontefract Road in Stourton. The current pipes are old and prone to bursting and we’ve requested to complete this project as soon as possible to reduce the risk of future bursts and unplanned disruption.
What we're doing
This is a complex project with pre-scheme investigation showing numerous other pipes and utilities located in this area. We have and will continue to work closely with Leeds City Council in the planning and delivery of this essential project, and collaborative working options are being discussed to help reduce future roadworks in the area.
The work will be completed in stages, the details with plans are below.

Approximate dates and durations
Update- June 2026
There has now been a further change of plans for the final section of this work. We’re sorry for any confusion and would like to thank you everyone for bearing with us through the final stage of the project.
The full road closure on Pontefract Road will revert to a one-way closure from Wednesday 1 July. This means that traffic will be able to move east again from Leeds towards the M1.
There will also be three-way traffic lights in place between Intermezzo Drive, M&S Tyre Services, and the Cemex Asphalt Plant. This will keep everyone safe by controlling the flow of traffic through the closure.
We are aiming to be finished with this section of the work by Wednesday 22 July.

Finally, we will be returning to Skelton Grange Road from Thursday 23 July to complete a final disconnection. This will require a temporary ban on turning right from Pontefract Road onto Skelton Grange Road. We are expecting this work to take three days.
This may take longer if we run into bad weather, poor ground conditions, or other difficult circumstances. We will update you again if there are any major changes or delays.
