Yorkshire Water is keen to hear from residents and businesses in Scarborough ahead of a multimillion-pound investment in the wastewater network in the town to help improve water quality.

Known as ‘Doing Right By Yorkshire, Doing Right By Scarborough’ the Scarborough investment will be made over the next two to three years and several different solutions are being explored.

Yorkshire Water wants to hear the views of residents and businesses on how best to deliver the work. From 28 April to 2 June, members of Yorkshire Water’s Partnership team will be in Scarborough Library on Vernon Street every Tuesday from 10am-2pm.

People attending the drop-in sessions will be able to see the details of the different solutions and offer their thoughts. There is also a webpage where people can leave feedback.

As a significant construction project, the website and face-to-face discussions will also ask for feedback on elements of disruption people would be most concerned about and how the project can make a difference for the town, such as creating new jobs or enhancing the look and feel of the town.

Commenting on the plans, Lee Shepherd, capital delivery programme manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We are planning a significant investment in Scarborough to transform the way we manage wastewater and surface water. With such a large project and with so many people passionate about water quality in the area, we’re keen to gather feedback from residents and regular visitors about the options we are considering for wastewater treatment and rainfall management.

“Dealing with wastewater and rainfall in Scarborough is complex, given its geography and the demands on its resources, which is why several options are under consideration. The insight from residents and local businesses will help us make the right decisions on how we deliver the work we need to do.”

Following a significant investment in 2015, the continued pace of climate change, tourism and plans to grow the town, require upgrades to be made to further reduce standing water on the roads and run-off from roofs heading into the bathing and surfing areas.

The plans are part of a wider programme of investment Yorkshire Water is making across the counties over the next five years under the title of ‘Doing Right By Yorkshire’. These plans include investment in wastewater and water treatment, upgrades to customer services and the replacement of mains pipes.
