Yorkshire Water’s winter ready tips to protect pipes ahead of cold snap
11/20/2025
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow in parts of the region which increases the risk of frozen and burst pipes. Yorkshire Water is urging customers to act now to protect their homes and properties as the cold snap of wintery weather, including snow and ice, takes hold.
Insulating exposed pipes especially in unheated areas like attics, basements, garages, and external walls, is one of the most effective ways to prevent them from freezing. Lagging pipes with insulation helps to maintain warmth and reduces the risk of cracks and bursts when temperatures drop, often leading to costly repairs and water supply disruptions.
Emily Brady, communications manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Burst pipes can cause lots of damage to customers’ homes, but simple steps, such as lagging exposed pipes protects them from the cold weather.
“Check for pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks, and water meters in unheated areas that might be exposed to the cold. There’s lots of tips on our website that customers can follow on how to get their homes winter ready and protect them from unexpected bursts.
“This will also help insulate your hot water system and could save you money on bills. You can also protect your outdoor taps with a tap cover to stop them freezing.”
Lagging pipes is a preventative measure, but Yorkshire Water also has advice for customers who have a frozen pipe. If you turn your tap on and find water is not running, it may be frozen. Here’s what you can do to get water running again:
- Check all exposed pipes for any leaks or bursts - if you can’t see anything then turn the tap on at your kitchen sink and heat the pie with a hairdryer.
- Never use a naked flame to defrost a pipe.
- If a pipe has burst, then turn your water off at the stop tap to minimise damage and water loss and find a trusted plumber via Water Safe
