Yorkshire Water will begin a £1.6m project to replace over 4.9km of water mains in Levisham, in the North York Moors, on Monday 11 August.

Replacing the mains will improve reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage and prevent water main bursts in the area. The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region over the next five years.

Alex Spivey, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “As part of our clean water investment over the next five years, North Yorkshire is seeing a significant upgrade to its pipework. In the first year of our mains replacement project over 90km of pipes will be replaced in this part of the county, with more already planned for the following years.

“In Levisham, the main has burst 12 times in the last three years – it’s a priority for us to get the work here done so that we can start to reduce some of the disruption for customers going forward.”

Contract partners M Group and North East Pipelines will be installing the new mains across Levisham Moor and are expected to take around seven months to complete the work.

Alex added: “There might be some additional traffic in the villages of Levisham and Lockton whilst we lay the new pipe, but we’ll be doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work. We’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience.”

Elsewhere in North Yorkshire, multiple mains replacement schemes are already being delivered, including a £1.8m scheme between Well and Bedale and a £1.5m scheme in Brompton-on-Swale.

The projects are part of Yorkshire Water’s £8.3bn investment into Yorkshire over the next five years.
