Yorkshire Water’s smart water meter upgrade team has hit the 30,000-mark as the Sheffield roll-out, that began in January 2025, continues into the S1, S10 and S11 areas of the city.

The smart meter upgrade is part of Yorkshire Water’s five-year plan to exchange over 1.4 million end-of-life meters across the region.  These smart technology devices send over 20 readings per day to help:

  • Customers save money
  • Help Yorkshire Water find and fix leaks faster
  • Help us all to save water

Since the pilot scheme started in 2022, smart meters have helped to save over 2.5million litres of water every day, protecting supplies and helping customers to save money.

Customers who’ve recently had a smart meter upgrade are also eligible for a free water efficiency survey to help them save even more water and cut down on their bills.  Our water-efficiency partners, Aqualogic, are offering a free Fit 2 Save home visit, for customers that have made the smart meter switch.

Customers are invited to book a convenient appointment for an Aqualogic technician to make a home visit.  They will check to see if customers can benefit from water saving opportunities, such as tap adaptors, shower timers, aquair showerheads, dual flush convertors or save-a-flush bags for the loo cistern and even water butts for the garden.

The technician will explain how the products work, as well as some basic and every day changes customers can make to help them save water, save energy and save money on their bills.  The water saving adaptors can be fitted same day and they’ll make a note of the appointment date so that customers can track their water usage and see how much water, and money, they’ve saved once the adaptors are up and running.

Jonathan Adler, Commercial Director at Aqualogic, commented:

“We’re delighted to continue and grow the excellent work we’ve been delivering in partnership with Yorkshire Water.  We’ve already seen the real impact that effective water efficiency interventions can have, and working with the smart-meter exchange allows us to engage with more organisations and communities.”

The new My Account page for Smart Metering customers goes live at Yorkshire Water soon and customers will be able to see their own water usage in almost real-time.  It empowers customers to take control of their water usage as they can track how much water they’re using throughout the day and make informed choices to reduce waste and lower their bills.

James Wilson, Smart Meter Delivery Manager, said:

“We started our smart meter programme journey in 2022 and since that date we have saved over 2 million litres of water per day, just by identifying leaks in customers’ pipes. As the smart water meter roll-out expands, it will help customers to save money on their bills, help us to spot and fix leaks sooner and help us all to save water.

“Working with Aqualogic on the Fit2Save programme allows customers to take advantage of the free home-survey and water saving adaptors.  We’re all aware of how we can manage and save on our heating and energy consumption, customers will soon be able to make informed choices on their water usage too.  With the current dry weather and temporary hosepipe restrictions, customers can see, understand and also take part in proactively save, water, save money and save wastage.”
