£780k mains replacement work in North Cowton and East Cowton
Yorkshire Water has begun a £780k project to replace 2.3km of water mains in the North Yorkshire villages of North Cowton and East Cowton.
Replacing the mains will improve reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage, and prevent water main bursts in the area. The work forms part of a wider £406m investment in replacing more than 1,000km of water mains across the region by 2030.
Contract partner United Infrastructure will be replacing the mains pipework on Moulton Lane, West Lane, Raby Lane, and along a section of the B1263 in North Cowton first. Work will then begin in East Cowton in June.
Nichola Fairbairn project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We are undertaking a huge upgrade to our clean water network, with over 170km of mains being replaced over the last year, as part of our wider £8.3bn investment into our infrastructure and service.”
Yorkshire Water is prioritising poor performing assets that will benefit most from mains renewals - areas prone to disruption, bursts and supply interruptions. In North Yorkshire, so far, schemes have been completed in Grassington, Bedale, Settle, Sutton, Hauxwell to Hunton, and Thirn to Thornton.
Nichola added: “Once we’re finished in North Cowton and East Cowton, bursts and potential loss of supply in the area will be much less likely, and we’ll be delivering the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect.
“We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption at a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.”
Local residents have been contacted in regard to any localised disruption. The project is expected to be completed in the summer.
