Apprenticeship Roles & Pathways

Our apprenticeships span a wide range of disciplines. Each one gives you the chance to gain skills, qualifications, and experience while working on projects that matter.

Field-based apprenticeship

Apprentice Mechanical Fitter – Level 3

What the role entails:

Work hands-on with Pumps, Valves, Pipework and Gearboxes across our clean water, wastewater, pumping stations and reservoirs. You’ll maintain, repair and install mechanical equipment that keeps water moving through every part of our network. A practical role fault finding and working with hydraulics, pressures and flows.

Apprentice Electrician (Electrical Maintenance Engineer) – Level 3

 What the role entails:

This is not a domestic “sparky” role. You’ll train as an Electrical Maintenance Engineer, looking after electrical panels, automation equipment and critical electrical systems across our treatment works and pumping stations. You’ll learn how to safely isolate our electrical equipment and carry out maintenance activity such as fault finding on motors and starters.

Apprentice Reservoir Engineer – Level 3

What the role entails:

Work on Raw Water sources such as Reservoirs and Abstraction Points. You’ll monitor levels, maintain assets and ensure water is safely and reliably fed into Clean Water Treatment Works. A role at the heart of the Raw-Water-to-tap journey working in some of our most picturesque locations.

Apprentice ICA Engineer (Instrumentation, Control & Automation) – Level 3

What the role entails:

Keep our automated processes running. You’ll install, maintain and programme instruments, sensors and control systems across pumping stations, reservoirs and treatment works. Wherever there’s a process to monitor — flow, pressure, level, chemical dosing — ICA Engineers make sure the technology is working.

Apprentice Process Engineer – Level 3

What the role entails:

Based on Clean Water Treatment Sites, you’ll follow and control the processes that turns Raw Water into safe drinking water. You’ll monitor supply and demand, operate treatment stages, carry out routine checks and use SCADA systems to oversee flows, pressures and plant performance. A mix of indoor and outdoor technical work.

Apprentice Field Technician Level 3

Apprentice field technicians work on asset reliability, carrying out cycle maintenance checks and responding to asset failures. It is a customer-facing role, often responding to issues raised by customers.

Apprentice Water Regulations Inspector Level 4

They inspect plumbing systems to determine if they’re compliant on domestic and commercial premises. They then work to find resolutions for any plumbing that is not compliant.

Office-based apprenticeships

Apprentice Data Analyst – Level 4

What the role entails:

Work with large datasets that help Yorkshire Water operate efficiently. You’ll analyse information such as leakage, pressure, supply and demand, asset performance and operational data. Your insights will support teams across the business to make informed decisions.

Apprentice Asset Management Apprentice – Level 4

What the role entails:

Support the planning and management of our assets across the region. You’ll help assess asset condition, plan maintenance cycles and support the installation of new equipment across treatment works and underground networks. A project-focused role helping us invest in the right upgrades at the right time.

Apprentice Project Manager – Level 4

What the role entails:

Work with teams across the business to help deliver projects of all sizes — from office-based improvements to engineering works. You’ll support planning, coordination, tracking progress and ensuring projects run smoothly. A varied role working with both field-based teams and office colleagues.

Apprentice Human Resources Support Level 3

The role entails providing admin and project support tasks for teams within the people function. For example, supporting a recruitment team with interview invitations, supporting with people-related queries, organising events, and maintaining employee records.

Graduate Roles

Our 2-year graduate scheme gives you the chance to rotate across different areas of the business, explore career paths, and build a foundation for long-term success.
