We’re working on a scheme to replace around 1.3km of underground sewer pipes in order to improve the sewerage system in Walton and Crofton. Our contract partners, Barhale, are carrying out this work on our behalf.
The existing sewer is located under the road but in order to reduce disruption, we designed the project so that most of the construction work took place in private land and fields. However we do have to lay the final part of the new pipeline under Shay Lane itself.
From Wednesday 20th July, the team will start work to lay a new sewer under Shay Lane. As we need to lay the pipe under the railway bridge and because of the nature of the work, this section of road will be temporarily closed in order to protect the safety of the on-site team and road-users. We cannot drill under the road as there is a risk it would affect the bridge and embankment.
Unfortunately this means we need to close the road for around six weeks and have a fully signed diversion route in place. In conjunction with Wakefield Council, a diversion route has been agreed around Greenside, Oakenshaw Lane, Walton Lane, Barnsley Road, Agbrigg Road, Doncaster Road, Lodge Lane, Harrison Road. We're carrying out the work in the school summer holidays in order to reduce disruption.
Metro will be providing a shuttle service for both Walton and Crofton. If you have any questions about the impact on buses, please visit www.wymetro.com or call Metro on 0113 245 7676. Please find below the changes to the bus routes -
