Notice of Exit Application

In April 2017, competition in the non-household water retail market was introduced by the Government to allow all non-household customers (businesses, charities, public sector and not for profit organisations) to be able to choose the retailer for their water and waste water services. These competitive retail activities include meter-reading, billing, payment handling, water efficiency advice and dealing with customer contacts.

Earlier this year it was announced that Yorkshire Water had reached an agreement to transfer its business customer retail portfolio to one of the UK’s largest non-domestic water supplier Business Stream.

We’ve now taken the next step in this process and can now confirm we have submitted a formal application to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the 1 May 2019 requesting approval to exit the market and transfer our retail business customer portfolio to Scottish Water Business Stream on the 1 October 2019.

We anticipate approval of the application by early July when we will be contacting all affected customers to let them know more about the transfer, the options open to them and where to obtain further information.

Customers do not need to take any action at this stage and can be assured they will continue to receive their water and wastewater services as usual during the period up to and after the transfer takes place.

This change applies to non-household (business) customers only. Household customers will continue to receive their retail services from Yorkshire Water.

For background information on the planned transfer to Business Stream please see their press release. You can see the answers to the frequently asked questions about the transfer below. If you would like more information about Business Stream and their award winning service please visit their website.

This notification has been made in accordance with Regulation 9 of The Water and Sewerage Undertakers (Exit from Non-household Retail Market) Regulations 2016. This notice will not be removed from Yorkshire Water’s website until the exit date has passed.
