Coronavirus - a message for business customers

After the Government announced the latest covid restrictions, we’ve been reviewing all of our procedures and processes to make sure we can keep our colleagues and our customers safe. We’re key workers and we take our job to keep water flowing and toilets flushing really seriously. We want you to know that we’re always here if you need us.

We’re comfortable that the measures we’ve put in place allow us to continue to visit homes and businesses when we need to but some of the work we do has been temporarily paused to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

If we do need to visit you, our colleague will be wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) to make sure they protect themselves and you. They can still talk to you and explain what’s happening, but please do try to stay two metres away. Our colleagues will not be working if they, or anyone in their household, has symptoms of coronavirus.

Are you still doing unannounced water quality visits?

We routinely take samples of our water every single day to make sure we continue to supply the best quality of water. We visit homes and businesses to test taps, as well as testing our pipe network and our other assets, all at random across the region so we can comply with strict water quality regulations.

At the start of lockdown in March, we suspended visiting properties to take these samples to help prevent the spread of the virus.

As we’re safely conducting appointments and visits with PPE and risk assessments in place, we’re now resuming our sampling for businesses across Yorkshire. These visits are done at random so we can get a true understanding of the quality of the water.

Our samplers may visit your business and ask if you’re happy for us to take a sample. As your business will have covid 19 measures in place, and our samplers will have PPE and maintain social distancing, we believe this is safe and helps us to check the quality of water. If you’re worried and don’t want us to visit, that’s fine, we’ll try to visit another business instead.

Are you still sampling trade effluent?

It’s really important we regularly take samples of our trade effluent to ensure businesses across the region are compliant with regulations so we can carry on our role of protecting the environment.

Our sampling officers may visit your business to take a sample of trade effluent. As your business will have covid 19 measures in place, and our officers will have PPE and maintain social distancing, we believe this is safe and helps us to make sure businesses are compliant.

Please ensure our officers can safely access your premises to carry out this critical activity.

Keeping in touch with us

Regardless of who your retailer is, we’re responsible for providing, operating and maintaining the physical water and waste water assets and services. These include the collection, treatment and distribution of water to your premises and the collection, treatment and disposal of waste water from them.

In the event of an emergency, if you experience a potential public health issue such as a loss of water supply, low pressure, discolouration of your water or sewer flooding, you can get in touch with us directly for help. 

For any other matters such as meter reading, a query about your bill, or making a payment, please contact your retailer. If you’re not sure who your retailer is, their number will be on your latest water bill.
