Yorkshire Water launches new anti-plastics scheme in Ilkley

Yorkshire Water has launched Yorkshire on Tap in Ilkley as it takes one of its first steps to take one million bottles out of circulation.

Although millions of plastic bottles are bought across the county each year, it is clear the great Yorkshire public prefer tap water over bottled. Many of those bottles are thrown away and end up in landfill, causing untold damage on the environment.

Under the Yorkshire on Tap banner, the firm has introduced Refill Yorkshire, which allows local shops the opportunity to add themselves as free water stations in a bid to move consumers away from disposable plastics in favour of free Yorkshire Water refills.

A free Refill App is available to download on all App stores allowing businesses to add themselves and allow the public to find their nearest water station.

The firm launched in Ilkley at the recent carnival and has local businesses such as Milestone Designs, Dan’s Den, The Little Teahouse and Bar T’at signed up.

Director of Communications at Yorkshire Water, Richard Emmott, said: “We have all seen the devastating effects plastic bottles can have on the environment. Yorkshire on Tap is our commitment to change that.

“Reducing the number of plastic bottles by one million is certainly a challenge. Those bottles placed on top of each other would be the equivalent height of 14 Mount Everest’s!

“We would love the public to go into their favourite cafes and shops, let them know about the campaign and get them signed up by using the Refill App and adding their location.”

Participating shops and businesses will have stickers in their windows showing people they are offering Yorkshire Water on tap. All the public have to do is go into the shop and ask to get the country’s best water for free.

Owner of Milestone Designs, Julian Richards, said: “This is a great initiative and one which we fully support - we were delighted to sign up. It is vital we help raise awareness and it is great we can do that by also increasing footfall into our shop!”
