Once you've applied and made the applicable payment, we’ll do a survey and get back to you with a quote for the work within 28 days. Our delivery team handles the main laying and main connection work, which normally takes no more than 90 days (but do bear in mind, if the work is on a busy road, it may take longer as we’ll need to notify the local council).

If you’re not building a new road, you probably won’t need a new water main but you may need a new water connection to our existing mains network.

Before you apply
What to think about before you apply:
- Do you want to hire a self-lay provider (SLP) to lay the new main and make the connections?
- What was the previous use of the land you’re developing on? (Greenfield or brownfield?)
- If the land is brownfield, have you had a contamination assessment done?
- Do you know what size connections you need? (Household connections are usually 25mm).
- Are you eligible for a reduction to your infrastructure charges?
- Will you be installing any water re-use systems? (E.g. rainwater, boreholes/springs or grey water?)
- Is your development project notifiable to the HSE? (If so, we’ll need a copy of your F10 Notice).

Step 1: Apply
What you need to do:
- Apply to requisition a new water main and service connections using the link below.
- Make sure you include all the relevant supporting documents – these are listed with the application.
- Pay your application fee (£344.40 Incl. VAT).
- Pay the design fee of £1,725.60 (incl. VAT) for 1-100 properties / £2,175.60 (incl. VAT) for 101-200 properties / £2,853.60 (incl. VAT) for 201+ properties.
What we’ll do:
- Get back to you within 5 days to let you know we’ve got everything, or if we’re missing any details.
- If needed, we’ll call you to arrange a survey of your site within 7 days of our call.
- Provide you with a quote for the main installation work, a mains scheme design and terms and conditions within 28 days of receiving your application (or within 42 days if your site is complex).

Step 2: Pay the main installation quote
What you need to do:
- If you’re happy with your quote, send us your payment via bank card, BACS or cheque.
- Make sure to pay your quote and book in the main-laying work (see Step 3) within the 12-month quote validity period otherwise you’ll need to request a re-quote based on next year’s charges.
What we’ll do:
- Process your payment and send you a VAT receipt within 24 hours.
- Send you a mains call-off request form to complete and return when you’re ready to book in the work (see Step 3).
Step 3: Book in the main installation
What you need to do:
- Complete and return the mains call-off request form using the link below to book in the main installation work.
- Email your completed call-off form to newmains@yorkshirewater.co.uk.
- Pay the admin fee of £271.20 (incl. VAT) for the call-off request once you've received the invoice.
What we’ll do:
We’ll pass your work order to our delivery team, Network Plus, who will:
- Plan in the work and set a start date that’s within 90 days of your call-off (please note: this could take longer if we find we need to close the road).
- Call you within 7 days of your call-off to confirm the start date and arrange a pre-start meeting with you.
- Come to meet you on site before the agreed start date.

Step 4: We install the new main
What you need to do:
Make sure you or your chosen contact is available on site on the agreed start date.
What we’ll do:
Our delivery team, Network Plus, will come and carry out the following work on our behalf within 90 days of your call-off request:
- Install the new water main according to the design plan.
- Connect the new main to the existing mains network.
Step 5: Get your connection quotes
What you need to do:
- Complete and return a bulk order request form using the link below to get your service connection quotes.
- Email your completed form to newmains@yorkshirewater.co.uk.
- Pay the admin fee of £91.20 (incl. VAT) for the request once you've received the invoice.
What we’ll do:
Provide you with your service connection quotes and an information pack within 28 days of receiving your bulk order request.

Step 6: Pay the connection quotes
What you need to do:
- If you’re happy with your quotes, send us your payment via bank card, BACS or cheque.
- Make sure to pay your quotes and book in the connection work (see Step 8) within the 6-month quote validity period otherwise you’ll need to request re-quotes based on next year’s charges.
What we’ll do:
- Process your payment and send you a VAT receipt within 24 hours.
- Send you a checklist to complete and return when you’re ready to book in the connection work (see Step 8).
Step 7: Lay your service pipes
What you need to do:
Dig and lay the service pipes for each property on site, according to the agreed design plan and the specifications enclosed with your connection quotes.
What we’ll do:
If there are any off-site connections needed (connections to an existing main outside the boundary of your site), we'll dig and lay the pipework for these ourselves.
We may also arrange a visit to your site to make sure that the pipework you've laid meets regulatory standards before the connections are made.
Step 8: Book in your connections
What you need to do:
- Complete and return the checklist to us at least 14 days (for on-site connections) or 28 days (for off-site connections) before you need your new water supply.
- If the properties are new, send us a copy of the council letter confirming the address of each new property.
- Keep in mind that the plots must be ready, and the pipework correctly laid, before we come to site, otherwise we’ll need to cancel the work and charge you an additional fee for the aborted visit.
What we’ll do:
We’ll pass your work order to our delivery team, Network Plus, who will:
- Plan in the work and set a connection date that’s within 14 days (for on-site connections) or 28 days (for off-site connections) of receiving your checklist.
- Call you within 3 working days to confirm the connection date.
Step 9: We get you connected
What you need to do:
Make sure you or your chosen contact is available on site on the agreed connection date.
What we’ll do:
Our delivery team, Network Plus, will come and carry out the following work on our behalf within 14 days (for on-site connections) or 28 days (for off-site connections) of your work order:
- Connect your pre-laid service pipes to the water main.
- Install stop taps and any required meters and chambers at the boundary of each property.
- Make sure your new water supply is ready for use as soon as you need it.
