Automated Meters
Over the next 7 years we're upgrading all of the region with Automated Meters.
This will happen either when new buildings are built, when customers decide to have a meter fitted or when we change an old meter for a new one.
How do they work?
The new meter is fitted with a built in transmitter that sends the reading to us when we're on the road outside your property - this means we no longer have to disturb you to take a reading.
Benefits
-
Less hassle - we'll no longer need to look at the meter to read it whether it's inside or outside your home
-
100% accurate - the reading we take is the same as the numbers on the meter
-
Tells us about leaks - it will warn us of any potential leaks
-
Free installation - no additional charge to your bill

Is it safe and secure?
Your meter reading is only sent out when we ask for a reading. We'll typically only ask for reading twice a year, as we do now. No customer details are ever sent as part of this.
The signal uses a frequency that can only be used for this purpose and is of very low power. We're regulated by the government in this area and they have confirmed it's well within safe standards.
For comparison the signal strength is the same as a garage door or car door opening signal.
- The meter takes regular recordings.
- The meter monitors for water leaks.
What do I need to do?
- There is nothing you need to do to look after the new meter.
- You can still read your water meter as you do now.
Please don't cover your meter or box it in as we'll still need access for maintenance.
