Customers in Shipley are set to benefit from a £600,000 project to improve the sewer system and significantly reduce the risk of sewer flooding to some local homes
Work will start early January to install a large underground waste water storage tank capable of holding 650,000 litres of waste water - roughly the equivalent to the volume of water contained within 8,000 typical baths.
The work, which is expected to be complete by May 2012, is part of our £120 million investment to upgrade our sewer network and treatment facilities to further reduce the risk of sewer flooding, which can occur when sewers become overloaded during times of heavy rainfall.
The new storage tank will collect storm water during wet weather and hold it until it is safe to be released back into the local sewer network. The storage tank will be installed in the grounds of Shipley Catholic Men's Society, located off Bradford Road near the junction with Marlborough Road.
we'll also be upsizing the sewer along Avondale Road and Back Bradford Road and installing a new sewer overflow on Avondale Road.
To ensure the safety of motorists and on-site engineers, Avondale Road (from the junction with Bradford Road up to Avondale Crescent) will be closed from 16 January to 4 May and a small section of Back Bradford Road will be closed from 13 January to 24 February. There will be a diversion route in place during this time.
Work will also have to be carried out in Bradford Road for around three days during the scheme and there will be temporary traffic lights in place during this time.
