Discoloured water

Very occasionally, your water may be discoloured. This is most often caused by changes in flow or pressure which can leave iron and manganese sediments within the water pipes.

We understand that customers find this water unnappealing, so if you experience short-term discoloured water and you need water for drinking or cooking, please follow our advice:

1. Run the tap which is fed first from your water supply for several minutes (this will usually be your kitchen tap).

2. Fill a jug and leave it to stand until any sediment has settled to the bottom.

3. Pour the clean water from the top of the jug for use.

Discoloured water resulting from iron and manganese deposits is unlikely to have any health implications.

Whilst your water is discoloured, don't run the hot tap or use dishwashers, washing machines or any appliances fed by your hot water supply.

If your water's permanently discoloured, or you're concerned, please contact us on 0845 1 24 24 24 and we'll arrange for a representative to visit and investigate the problem.

Cloudy or milky water

Water can appear cloudy or milky if air mixes with the supply. If water containing air is allowed to stand for a few minutes in a glass, the water will clear from the bottom of the glass upwards as the air bubbles rise to the surface.

 Running tap

There's no risk to health associated with aerated water, it just looks different.

If your water is permanently cloudy or milky, or you're concerned, call us on 0845 1 24 24 24 and we'll arrange a visit.

Top tips for tip-top water

Chlorine in your water

Chlorine is added to the water supply at the treatment works to disinfect it. Whilst the level of chlorine is kept to a minimum to ensure a wholesome supply, a small amount of chlorine is occasionally detectable by customers who have a sensitive palate.

An easy way to reduce the amount of chlorine in your drinking water is to pop a jug of tap water in your fridge for a couple of hours - not only will it be nicely chilled, it will also taste good too. The jug should be covered and any water left after 24 hours should be thrown away - or you could use it to water for your plants.

Flooding

First and foremost please let us know where the flooding is.  We like to have as much notice as possible to give us more time to resolve the issue where we can.

If flooding occurs inside your property as a result of public sewer flooding, or you see pollution in a watercourse, let us know as soon as possible.

If flooding occurs outside your property, please wait for the rain to stop as the excess water is likely to drain away as the weather improves.  However, if you're still concerned, call us.

If the flooding is coming from a watercourse, such as a river or stream, please contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 or 0845 9881188.

Get the latest information on flood alerts from the Environment Agency flood warning website.
