Why drink water?

Why drink water?Every day we use water for many things we do; whether we're washing our car or taking a shower. It's also important to remember that it should be an essential part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Water actually makes up two thirds of our bodies and levels can often run low, especially if the weather is really hot or you've been playing sport, so it's important that we drink enough water each day to keep us properly hydrated. Not only does it help us concentrate more it's also a great calorie free alternative to fizzy drinks and it's a lot cheaper too!

Remember to drink 8 glasses of water a day - you may need more if you're exercising heavily!

Make sure you're drinking enough water

Follow these simple steps to make sure you're drinking enough water each day.

8 glasses of water a day
  1. Drink a glass of fresh water first thing in the morning
  2. Drink a glass of water before and during each meal
  3. If you're not used to drinking water regularly, try replacing one of your other drinks each day with fresh water. You can then gradually replace more drinks with water
  4. Fill a bottle with chilled tap water to take with you wherever you go
  5. Drink a glass of tap water with your coffee and tea
  6. Order tap water with your meal in restaurants and bars
  7. Hot water with lemon or other fruit is a great alternative way to drink water
  8. Keep a check on the colour of your urine, remembering the clearer it is the more hydrated you are.
  9. Watch out for signs of dehydration which can include headaches, tiredness, weakness and sometimes even dizziness

Are you drinking enough ? Take our tinkle test using one of our pee-o-meters - simply check the colour of what comes out naturally against the scale.

Thirst for sport

Follow these four easy steps to make sure you stay hydrated during sport or exercise.

  1. Drink slowly and early - it's physically easier to do this when you're still feeling fresh.
  2. Drink at 10 to 15 minute intervals to continually replenish any water lost through sweat.
  3. For regular exercise of less than an hour, fresh water is all you need to drink.
  4. At the end of your session, remember to continue to drink water.
