Top tips for tip-top quality water

Top tips for tip-top quality waterWe like to make sure our water looks and tastes great, but once it has left our water mains there's a few things you can do to help keep it tip-top.

Why not try some of these helpful tips?

  • Ensure kitchens and bathrooms are well ventilated to prevent the build up of moulds and stains on tiles and other surfaces which are often in contact with water.
  • Clean up any spillages, such as petrol or heating oil, on your property immediately (e.g. driveway) to prevent contamination of plastic pipework.
  • Ensure hot water pipes aren't too close to cold water pipes to prevent cold water pipes becoming warm, which can lead to water developing a cloudy appearance due to the presence of air bubbles.
  • Clean taps and shower heads to prevent the build up of slimes and limescale

  • Check valve for washing machines and dishwashersConnect a non return valve to hoses from dishwashers and washing machines to minimise unwanted taste and smell
  • Briefly run off any water which has stood in your pipework overnight before the water is drunk (very important if your pipes are lead).  Save this water for house plants or your garden.
  • Use approved plumbing materials and an approved plumber to replace pipework to minimise taste, smell, and discolouration problems.
  • Inspect header and other storage tanks regularly, checking for adequate covers, vents and ventilation to help prevent tastes, smells and slimes.
