Water quality notice

river in front of a farmhouseThe blend of water in your area has changed.

Please check below if your water supply zone is affected and follow our advice.

Sheffield Water Supply Zones (various)

The proportion of soft moorland water in some areas of Sheffield has decreased and has been replaced with river derived water which tends to be harder. The water blend might vary at different times of the day and from day to day.

As a result you may notice that your kettle develops a slight build up of scale. This is due to increased levels of naturally occurring calcium bicarbonate. You may also notice a difference in taste although this is not harmful in any way.

This blending of water is a routine and seasonal procedure in order to balance water stocks in the region.

More information on water hardness is available in the water quality section of our website.

Areas affected

  • Areas within Manor, Moonshine Ewden, Loxley, Norton, Sheffield and Wincoside Water Supply Zones

Dewsbury Water Supply Zone

The proportion of soft moorland reservoir derived water has decreased and has been replaced with river derived water, which tends to be harder.

As a result you may notice that your kettle develops a slight build up of scale. This is due to increased levels of naturally occurring calcium bicarbonate. You may also notice a slight film or scale on the top of hot drinks. This scale is not harmful in any way.

This blending of water is a routine procedure which takes place during the spring or summer, for operational reasons. This is only a short term arrangement and the normal water supply configuration will be reverted to in the near future.

Due to operational reasons, the water in this area is being brought in from a different source using our Water Supply Grid.

The new water supplying your property is likely to have a higher level of chlorine which is used to kill any remaining harmful bacteria during treatment and helps ensure your water stays fresh as it passes through the mains network on its way to your tap.  Find out more about chlorine and how it might affect your water supply.
