Yorkshire's coast

Edna and MaryIn Yorkshire we're spoilt for choice when it comes to getting the bucket and spade out.

We've some of the most popular coastal resorts in the UK, including Flamborough Head and the country's oldest seaside resort at Scarborough where I rent a beach chalet and do me knitting and our Eric makes the brews. We also like a trip up to Whitby for a nice fish supper.

I've holidayed on the Yorkshire Coast every summer since I was a young lass and the water has never been cleaner. I mentioned this to Edna and she pointed out that Yorkshire Water's multi-million pound investment has helped keep coastal bathing water clean. Well I never!

Summer loving

That's right Mary, and the revised Bathing Water Directive (RBWD) comes into force in 2015 and requires an 'excellent' standard to be met for bathing water quality before Blue Flag certificates can be considered.

They're investing £110 million by 2015 to help improve the standard of Yorkshire's coastal waters so you'll be able to slip on your bikini and go for a swim.

What's a bikini, Edna, a tropical fruit?

A bit about Bridlington

Bridlington is a lively and popular resort, yet is a town that has managed to hold onto the finest traditions of a seaside resort. Its marvellous beaches, award-winning promenades and bustling harbour make it a top attraction for all ages.

Recent work

Our massive investment has provided Bridlington with hi-tech sewage facilities.  The state of the art treatment works now uses an ultra violet disinfection process to make sure 99.9 per cent of all harmful bacteria are removed from the waste water before it is pumped out to sea. It is designed to treat over 13 million litres of sewage every day.

A bit about Hornsea

Child listening to seashellHornsea is a small picturesque holiday centre located between the sandy beaches of the North Sea and Hornsea Mere - Yorkshire's largest lake.

Recent work

A £16 million project included a pumping station in Hornsea and a new treatment works in the near-by village of Mappleton. This boasts the latest in ultra violet disinfection - the ultimate in terms of sewage treatment technology - and goes far beyond standards required by EU and UK legislation and is helping to significantly improve the bathing water quality of the East Yorkshire resort.

A bit about Scarborough

Established as the first seaside spa resort, Scarborough attracted people from all over the region who wanted to "take the water" for their aches and pains. The resort is divided into two bays - South Bay where there are harbour-side stalls, arcades and gift shops; and the North Bay with its beautiful stretch of sandy beach and nearby family attractions such as the Sea Life Centre and Peasholm Park.

Recent work

We've invested £30 million in a scheme to provide hi-tech sewage treatment facilities for Scarborough.

Beach ball in waterThe award winning waste water treatment works has been cleverly disguised as a local farm. It incorporates a variety of buildings like a Dutch barn, stables, a mock horse gin, gatehouse and farmhouse which house the complex sludge treatment processes, sophisticated odour control units and electrical control rooms.

The plant uses the very latest sewage treatment technology - ultra-violet disinfection - to ensure that 99.9 per cent of all harmful bacteria is removed from the treated waste water before it is returned to the sea. It is designed to treat, on average over 8 million litres of sewage every day.
