Discover stunning sights at Ramsden Reservoir 

Use our free car park to the east of the reservoir and enjoy the circular walk which take you over steep uneven ground (walking boots are essential!) and offers stunning views of the top of Holme Moss Valley. Those looking for a less challenging walk can follow the vehicle track up to Riding Wood and Yateholme reservoirs, where there is no public access, but the reservoirs can be seen from the track.

By car

Car parking is available at our free car park on Brownhill Lane, HD9 2QW.


From Holmfirth

Head south-west on Huddersfield Road/A6024. After 1.8 miles, you will pass through Holmbridge and just after the bridge crossing the River Holme, turn left onto Bank Lane which bears sharply right after 250 feet. Bank Lane becomes Bronwnhill Lane and after 0.8 miles, you will find Ramsden Car Park on your left.

Can you swim in Ramsden Reservoir?

No, you can't swim in Ramsden Reservoir. Reservoirs are really dangerous places and have lots of dangers hidden under the surface. We don't allow anyone to swim in our reservoirs, even if you’re a great swimmer!

Why can’t you swim in Ramsden Reservoir?

Ramsden Reservoir has lots of hidden dangers. The water is very cold (even in summer) and cold water shock can kill. Ramsden Reservoir supplies water to be treated, so there's machinery and strong currents under the water. There may also be blue-green algae, which causes rashes and severe illnesses.

Can dogs swim in Ramsden Reservoir?

No, it’s not safe for dogs to swim in Ramsden Reservoir and they shouldn’t drink the water. Blue-green algae can form on the surface, which is poisonous and can kill them. There’s also dangerous machinery and strong currents under the water.

Is wild swimming allowed in Ramsden Reservoir?

No, Ramsden Reservoir is dangerous. Reservoirs aren't the same as natural lakes, they’re man-made and have large machinery that’s working 24/7 just below the surface. They’re also very cold, have strong currents and might have blue-green algae which causes rashes and severe illness.
