Edna says that saving water in the 'ome is an easy way to play our part in helping the environment. It means we need to take less water from our region's rivers, reservoirs and ground water sources. She says whether it's doing just one thing differently in the bathroom, kitchen or garden our actions can really make a difference. And don't forget, the more water you save, the more money you save too!

To show how taking a few simple steps can save a substantial amount of water, Edna and Mary have been testing out some of our water saving gadgets around the home. Check out their videos below to see how they got on.

How to save water:

T'other day I was telling Mary that Yorkshire Water has loads of tips and gadgets to help her save water. When I mentioned the Flushsaver she asked if it would stop the hot flush she gets when that nice Paul Hudson does the weather. For those of you who are a lot less daft than her, here is various ways to save water.

And to save more brass, follow me on Facebook and Twitter where I'll be giving more money saving tips. It's easy to save water, whether it's in the bathroom, kitchen or garden.

In the bathroom

Over 60% of your household's water usage happens in the bathroom.

  • An easy and simple way to save water in your bathroom is by fitting a Flushsaver device which you can get for free from us. This simple device sits at the bottom of your toilet's cistern and saves around one litre of water every time you flush. If you have a dual flush toilet then you are already doing a good job at saving water. Click the link below to order your free flush saver online now.

  • Turning the tap off whilst brushing your teeth is another really easy way to save water. In fact this one simple action can save up to ten litres of water each time you brush.
  • Save water and save energy by opting for a shower instead of a bath. 15,000 litres of water per year could be saved if you choose this quick refreshing way of bathing, but if you have a power shower this may not be the best option. Power showers actually use one third more water than a bath in just 10 minutes.
  • Another hot tip if you do have a bath is to check the temperature of the water as it fills up, this will stop you from having to fill it with lots of cold water to cool it down.

Did you know?

On average, Yorkshire Water supplies Yorkshire with 1.2 billion litres of fresh water every day.

In the kitchen

  • Make sure that every time you fill your washing machine or dishwasher it is fully loaded before you start it. Two half loads will use more water than one full load.
  • A modern dishwasher can use as little as 10 litres per cycle whereas an older style can use a massive 40 litres. When using your dishwasher, use the quick wash function if your pots and pans aren't really dirty.
  • If you are waiting for the tap to run hot, collect the water and use it on your plants. Instead of waiting for it to run freezing cold, collect drinking water in a jug and store it in the fridge for a refreshing drink.

Did you know?

Since 1995 Yorkshire Water has reduced leakage by 45%. That's enough water to meet the daily demands of a city the size of Leeds.

Outside the home

  • Have you ever thought about installing a water butt? An average rooftop collects 85,000 litres of water every year and a water butt is a great way to put some of this to use. A single water butt can collect around 5,000 litres of water which can be used in your garden or to wash your car.
  • Water your garden with a watering can rather than use a hosepipe or a sprinkler. A sprinkler can use as much water as a family of four uses in one day. If you do use a hose pipe fit a trigger gun attachment which allows you to control the flow of water more carefully.
  • Keep the length of your grass to around one inch long, this will allow it to retain moisture and keep it greener for longer. If the sun does decide to shine for longer than a couple of days and your lawn turns brown, don't automatically reach for the hosepipe. Grass is really resilient and will spring back to life after a rain shower.

    Latest water resources information

Levels in the region are normal at the moment even though we have had a very dry spring with little rain.

We have no plans to introduce any water restrictions at this time.

We are working hard and monitoring and managing the network every day to balance water resources across the region. We are doing this via our grid which is a network of underground pipes that allows us to move water to where it's needed. This gives us flexibility and helps us protect areas experiencing low rainfall. The grid is very resilient and means that an area isn't reliant on one particular supply if there's an unexpected problem, however it is only effective if the network has the water resources to move around.

We're investing £33 million to help reduce leakage across Yorkshire - recruiting 60% more people to find and fix leaks, upgrading our network of water pipes (some of which are 80 years old) and using the very latest technology.  See how we're committed to reducing leaks and bursts
