Reservoir photo competition

EmbsayWe've teamed up with Rotary in Yorkshire (Rotary District 1040) to launch a photography competition aimed at capturing the beauty of our reservoirs across the region - and making a huge difference to the lives of of a neglected community of 350,000 people who live in a remote island village 4,000 miles away in Tanzania.

The 'Water-Er way to make a difference' competition is open to everyone and the brief couldn't be simpler. All you have to do is take a photo at any one of our 141 reservoirs sites across the region - making sure it includes water - send it to Rotary International, either in digital form or as a hard copy print and you could be in with a chance of winning a number of great prizes (read on for full details.)

The competition is open to everyone and aims to raise funds to help 40,000 primary school children and 13,000 secondary school children who have no access to water for drinking or for hygiene with the added bonus of encouraging more people to discover the breathtaking beauty of our free recreational sites.

Each £5 competition entry fee will go towards helping the children of the small island community of Ukerewe by improving the water and sanitation facilities in as many of the primary and secondary schools on the island as possible.

To do this, a team of volunteers from the charity Rotary International will fly out to Ukerewe in February 2011 with medication and other sought after resources to help the 350,000 strong island population.  Over the period of their two week visit, they will build new water-resourced sanitation facilities and create water systems which will hopefully eliminate the need for water to be fetched manually from nearby rivers.

If you need some insipiration for your photo's, check out our flickr channel - click here

As well as helping improve school conditions, volunteers will also be improving the situation at the islands' only hospital by creating a continuous water supply to replace the intermittent supply it currently receives.

Every penny we get will be used to make a difference to the lives of the people of Ukerewe. There are 80 primary schools and 24 secondary schools on the island - none with water or toilets. We hope to supply water and construct toilets in as many schools as possible

John Philip, past district governor of Rotary International West Yorkshire

How to enter

And in addition to helping make a difference to the lives of children in Ukerewe, entrants also have the added incentive of having their work judged by acclaimed photographer and former Yorkshire Water employee Ian Beesley.

RecreationThe winning entrant, as judged by Ian Beesley will win £500 worth of prizes courtesy of water process solutions company Flowquip and it's sister organisation FlowHIRE Ltd, as well as having their winning picture framed to the value of £120 by Otley-based The Art Works.

Another covetable prize is a one-year free membership of the Royal Photographic Society.

There will also be an exhibition of selected photographs (date and venue to be confirmed). ProAm Imaging of Bradford, the leading professional photographic imaging company have agreed to print entries for the exhibition to A3 size, in support of the project.

Visitors to Yorkshire Water's website will also be able to see if they agree with Ian's decision as many of the pictures will be uploaded onto a special homepage gallery.

The deadline for entries is Friday 7 January 2011 and, to be in with a chance of winning, all entrants have to do is send their captioned photos, either by email to johnphilip@btconnect.com or alternatively send them by post to:

Dr John Philip
Past district governor of Rotary International West Yorkshire
4 Dorchester Road
Huddersfield
HD2 2JZ

The entry fee is £5 and this covers as many photos as an entrant wishes to send through.  All cheques should be made payable to 'Mirfield Rotary Charity Account' and sent directly to John's address.

We're delighted to support what is a fantastic initiative which will hopefully go a long way towards changing the lives of hundreds of children currently living and studying in such challenging conditions. Not only will entrants be making a difference to the lives of these people, but we hope that this competition will also encourage those people who may have never visited our recreational sites to get out and enjoy them and take advantage of everything they offer.
