Environmental management
Our environmental targets will ensure our performance continues to improve.
They are to:
- Achieve and maintain compliance with legal and regulatory obligations as monitored and reported by our Environmental Management System, including work carried out on our behalf by our partners.
- Reduce further the impact of our activities on the environment through the use of innovative technology, effective management control systems and through targeted efficient investment.
- Go beyond compliance when we believe the benefits exceed the cost.
- Seek to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change through innovative techniques and technologies, and by the efficient use of energy and chemicals.
- Seek to use environmentally responsible suppliers and contract partners and work with them to encourage environmental improvements.
- Seek to use materials efficiently and promote the application of the waste hierarchy.
- Proactively conserve and enhance biodiversity, through efficient and effective practices and the implementation of our Biodiversity Action Plan.
- Ensure that all our employees and those who work on behalf of the organisation have received appropriate environmental training and have developed an awareness of environmental issues included in this policy.
- Foster constructive relationships with our stakeholder groups, regulators and contracting partners.
- Manage our land holdings in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, balancing the needs of both our tenants and customers.
The targets were reviewed in line with the
Environmental Policy, which in turn was created using the Strategic Direction Statement, and the ISO14001 standard.
Compliance with the targets will subsequently be monitored using our Balanced Scorecard system.
The results of compliance with targets will be published annually.
We involve everyone in managing our environmental performance using our Environmental Management System (EMS). We're really proud that it has achieved ISO14001 certification. Our Environmental Policy provides the framework for our EMS, setting out our commitment to environmental issues.

All of our 2,200 employees have undergone environmental awareness training and our 170 environmental representatives across the business have been trained to handle environmental queries from their teams, carry out internal audits and liaise with our Environment Strategy Team.
Our Strategic Direction Statement (SDS) sets out our aspirations for service, the environment, prices and returns for the period 2010 to 2035. Before producing our SDS, we carried out extensive consultation with customers and stakeholders to find out what they think we should focus on over the next 25 years. We even asked children what they thought; they had some really exciting ideas so why not take a look.
