Vegetables Galore At Barnsley School
Pupils at Kexborough Primary School in Barnsley have a new outdoor classroom thanks to volunteers from Kelda Water Services who transformed the school's outdoor area as part of its sister company Yorkshire Water's One Million Green Fingers campaign.
Volunteers from the company, which provides water and waste water services to a host of clients across the UK, will be creating a large vegetable patch for pupils to enjoy. 12 raised beds will be created from scratch for pupils to plant with beetroot, broad beans, carrots and four potato bins will be made.
A space in the school grounds will be transformed into a digging area for the children to use mini JCBs in and an outside tap installed. An area around an existing tree will be filled with gravel, bark, logs and small rocks to encourage mini beasts to take up residence. This area will provide pupils with the opportunity to gain hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom environment.
Local prospective Labour parliamentary candidate Eric Illsley will also be visiting the school in the afternoon to see the work of the volunteers and find out what pupils think of their new garden.
The campaign is now in its third and final year - so far 190 school gardens have been created by Yorkshire Water's volunteers which will leave a lasting legacy right across the region.
