We Host African ExchangeColleague at site

We've welcomed five water engineers and sanitation experts from Africa in what is believed to be the first industry exchange programme of its kind.

Arriving from three of Africa's poorest countries - Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger - they will spend the next eight days visiting a number of the our clean and waste water sites across the region.

The programme - facilitated by the charity Rotary International - has been devised to encourage the sharing of ideas and solutions to challenges around clean water provision and the safe treatment and disposal of sewage.

It will also provide both groups with an opportunity to discuss forthcoming projects and look at idea and solution sharing around these, with the emphasis on encouraging new ways of thinking and exploring different solutions to common challenges.

We're delighted to welcome all five to Yorkshire and we're looking forward to spending some quality time with them exploring the different ways in which we go about approaching and resolving industry challenges. Obviously, they operate in a very different environment to us, yet they still face many of the same basic challenges and show great ingenuity and practicality to overcome these with often very limited resources at their disposal. We recognise that there's often many different ways to tackling the same problem and we're committed to sharing ideas around ways of working with like-minded people and organisations, in order to ensure that as a business we continue to provide customers with the same high quality value for money service they've come to expect from us.

Simon Barnes, Head of innovation delivery

Following their visit, we're hoping to organise a trip out to Africa for a number of its own engineers so that they can see firsthand just how their African colleagues go about tackling common industry challenges.

Prior to joining us, all five delegates spent a couple of weeks with members of Rotary International where they learnt more about the English way of life, the country's history and its culture.

This programme is the latest development in the Bradford based company's links to Africa, with our employees having so far raised over £1million for WaterAid through a variety of fundraising activities, with much of this money helping to provide lasting supplies of clean water, safe sanitation and hygeine education to areas of Africa where it is most needed.
