Water connection New water connections

If you're building or converting a property you'll need to apply for a new water connection.

What happens next?

Once you've applied we'll visit your site to assess the work required and confirm we can supply the amount of water you require. You'll then receive a quotation within 28 days. Once you've paid you'll need to contact our contractors to arrange your connection. We'll normally connect you within 21 days, though if we need to work in a busy road or restrict road traffic it may take three months because of the notice required by local councils.

What work will you do?

We'll lay the water pipe from the large water main in the street up to the boundary of your property (usually your garden wall/ fence).

Section 64 of the Water Industry Act 1991 requires separately occupied properties to be supplied by a separate service pipe. This applies to either a house or other building which we supply water to that doesn't have a separate service pipe(s). Failure to obtain a new supply will result in an illegal connection.

What work will I need to do?

You'll need to lay the pipe from your property boundary under your garden and into the building. You'll need to have your pipe installed and ready before we arrive.

What if I am developing a large site and need new mains laying on site?

You should still apply as usual. We'll then survey the site and design the route and size of the mains to supply your site. Before sending you the proposed design, you'll need to tell us how you want the water mains to be laid on your site. There are three options:

  • We'll excavate and lay the mains.
  • You excavate and we lay the mains.
  • You excavate and lay the mains on your site, known as self lay. We'll lay the mains in the highway and connect to your main once you have chlorinated and tested it and provided a chlorination certificate.

The quotation will be lower the more work you do yourself. When you've chosen an option we'll send you a quotation and a legal agreement to sign.

Once you've signed the agreement and paid you'll need to contact our contractors to arrange your connection. It can take up to 90 days to lay new water mains so please plan in advance. Once laid, we'll disinfect and test the main before connecting it up to the live water system. You can then request the quotations for the individual houses to be connected to the water main.

If you've any questions please call us on 01274 608008.
