Why drink water?

Water and healthWater makes up 80% of our brains so it's important that we drink enough to be able to concentrate - especially in class!

Children should regularly top up their water levels, particularly if it's a sports day or the weather is hot.  Not only is water better for them than those high calorie fizzy drinks, it's also much cheaper and available on tap!

Make sure your pupils are drinking enough water

To keep your pupils alert and healthy we recommend the following advice:

  • Children and adults should drink between six and eight glasses of water every day.
  • Children will need more water when exercising - to keep them properly hydrated they should drink slowly at 10 -15 minute intervals to replenish any water lost through sweat and continue drinking water after exercising.

We ran a community campaign to bring fresh drinking water to Yorkshire's primary schools, installing over 1,400 water coolers

  • Children will love this one - the colour of their wee may indicate that they are dehydrated. They can keep a check on the colour of their urine to make sure they're drinking enough water using our fun peeometers. Download a peeometer below.

  • Caffeine in fizzy drinks can disrupt sleep making children feel tired during lessons - water's a much healthier alternative!
  • In the summertime when the weather is hot... children should be drinking more water when it's warm outside.  If they've a water bottle - make sure they fill it up regularly, otherwise you could always ask them to drink a glass of water when they get back in the classroom.
