Using poo as a source of energy
For thousands of years man has been using poo as a source of energy and even today, in countries around the world, poo is used as a fuel for cooking and heating.
Poo power is also better for the environment too - when biogas is burnt it generates far less carbon dioxide than when fossil fuels are used.
If you'd like to teach your children more about the importance of renewable energy and how electricity can be generated from what we flush down our toilets download our poo power booklet. There are interactive activities to do in the classroom and fun facts on sustainable development; how we can use poo power to light our homes in the future and something to please the kids - farting bugs that help us produce biogas.
It takes the poo of 100,000 people to generate 51kw of electricity, enough for 500 light bulbs (source www.upd8.org.uk)
