03 Safeguarding against future floods
When more than a month's rain fell in just one day last summer, rivers broke their banks, homes were flooded and systems became overwhelmed. The effects for some Yorkshire communities were devastating - and now we're working hard to minimise the impact should the floods strike again

Our infrastructure was also severely affected by the unprecedented amount of rain that fell, filling up to capacity in some parts of the region. Our colleagues worked round the clock to keep these systems going, when in some cases, their own homes had been flooded. This ensured that flood water was pumped away and just as importantly that a clean drinking water supply was maintained across the region.

However, in some areas our systems were overwhelmed and since the flooding we've been working hard to return them to normal and understand how we can make improvements for the future.

Working with the other agencies involved in protecting the region will play a huge part in looking to the future, including the Environment Agency, who take care of rivers and local authorities who look after highway drainage. We'll be working with these agencies to establish what needs to be done and we're already making investments in our own systems to make them more flood resilient for the future.

We're committed to looking at what we can do to play our part in protecting the region from future flooding events.
