Giving something back to Yorkshire
We're really proud of our contribution to Yorkshire's communities.
Not only do we learn new skills, but it also allows us the opportunity to give something back- and that feels great!
One Million Green Fingers
Our aim is to create 350 gardens in Yorkshire schools by 2010. Our green-fingered volunteers typically spend a day helping a school to establish a garden; not only is it fun, it's a great way to get to know your colleagues better. Don't panic - you don't need to be a gardening expert to take part, just a team player with a bag full of enthusiasm. You can even suggest your local school for some help.
Here's what some of our colleagues and volunteers said about it:
"Everyone worked incredibly together as a team. We enjoyed watching the plain piece of land turn into a wildlife haven for the children. It's great to know that we're helping progress the children's education and teaching them about water conservation and the environment. It was great to see the whole project come and it was good fun."
Jenny Middleton, Metering Administrator
"We enjoyed the social aspect of the challenge. It gave us a great sense of satisfaction that we are helping children develop their gardening skills and having fun doing it. We enjoyed the challenge of organising the event, which helped to develop our leadership skills."
Jen Godfrey, Secretarial Assistant & Annette Conway Secretarial Assistant Supervisor
Right to Read and Number Partners
Once a week volunteers from Yorkshire Water spend time with pupils from a local school working one-to-one to improve their reading or numeracy skills.
Mentoring
From working with primary and secondary school students to our senior management mentoring programme which shares knowledge and expertise with social enterprises, you could be contributing to your community through mentoring.
School Governors
If you would like to take a further interest in your local school, we will actively encourage you to develop your potential by taking on a role as a school governor.
Speakers Panel
Many of our people have developed valuable presentation skills by giving talks and presentations about Yorkshire Water to community groups across the region.
