Development opportunities

Development opportunitiesWhatever your role we offer you real responsibility and decision making, so you can make a difference from the outset.

At Yorkshire Water there is a big emphasis on development: we encourage everyone to be the best they can be and continuous learning is key to your success and ours.

Through teamwork and innovation we were named Utility Of The Year for three consecutive years, an unprecedented achievement.  You can learn a lot from us but we'll be relying on you to make us even better. Your development is critical and it's important that we help you meet your personal aspirations, so we encourage a creative and flexible approach to individual and team learning.

I have worked with Yorkshire Water for 8 years and have progressed from a Clean Water Apprentice to providing Technical Support for the West Production area. I have been rewarded for my efforts and believe that anyone who is enthusiastic and hard working will receive the same benefits. I have completed NVQ Level 2 for Distribution and NVQ Levels 2 & 3 for Water Treatment. In the future I plan to complete an Asset Management degree course.

Rebecca Hord, Technical Support Engineer

Our training ranges from business skills such as influencing and presentation, to safety and IT courses. 250 managers and aspiring managers have recently completed our bespoke two year development programme to provide essential leadership skills including coaching for success, leading high performing teams, leading change, personal impact and influencing for results.

We support the achievement of further education and professional qualifications including the CIMA, CIWEM, CIPD, Post Graduate Certificate in Asset Management, and a range of business specific BTEC and NVQ qualifications.  Self-directed learning through library resources, internet and our personal development centre is also encouraged.

Before I started working at Yorkshire Water, I knew very little about the distribution of water or how a distribution network operated. Throughout my two year apprenticeship, I gained knowledge from many different sources, from the vast experience of my colleagues, placements across the business and completing an NVQ in Distribution Control. I am currently an Asset Technician and studying for a HND in Civil Engineering with the support of Yorkshire Water.

Liam Saddler, Asset Technician

Our learning isn't all about professional development.  You will have regular discussions about your development and career aspirations with your manager and there are lots of opportunities for career progression if that is what you are looking for.
