Hello everyone! Welcome to my first graduate blog. I will start with quick overview about me, before telling you about my time at Yorkshire Water.

I studied Surveying and Mapping Science (Hons) at Newcastle University and graduated in 2011. During December of my final year I applied for the Yorkshire Water graduate scheme, and after a rigorous screening process, I got offered the position!

During the summer before starting with Yorkshire Water, I worked weekends as a bar-tender and spent the weekdays enjoying the Great British sunshine! I went to Lanzarote in July which was really relaxing and definitely helped recharge my batteries before starting my first 'proper' job!

My first two weeks at Yorkshire Water was an 'Induction to the graduate scheme'. This covered all the different business units, the development opportunities available whilst on the scheme, a few free dinners and much much more?!

As an IT grad, my first placement has been in Technical Support.  This includes building many of the different assets Yorkshire Water has, such as blackberries, laptops and desktops. The team are also responsible for fixing any technical problem which colleagues are having.  Although I have only been in this placement a week, I have learnt so much already.  The team have been very welcoming, and have been keen to involve me in the challenges their facing, whilst teaching me new skills.
My time at Yorkshire Water has been great so far! I am really looking forward to all that is ahead of me! Keep checking my blog for further updates!

See you soon

Nathan

January 2012

Hi

This week I switched placements from Technical Support to the IT Service Desk, which has been a good change of pace.  I learnt a lot from my time in Technical Support, and it has provided me with a good foundation to be successful on the Service Desk, as there is direct link between the two.

Other Projects/ Activities I am involved in are:

One year placement in the industry schemes:  As a company we are currently looking into the possibility of running a placement year for current students. This requires meetings and networking with different areas of the business and universities.

New IT roll out project: This involves issuing the majority of the business with new key fobs, which allows access to different applications.

IT project reviews: Every 3 weeks I sit in on all the IT project reviews, which exposes me to IT project lifecycle and the different processes involved. I also have to take the minutes and assign actions for the reviews.

The Graduate Programme: I am industry liaison for this project, which requires interacting with different companies to set up sponsorship deals for the project.

I am still really enjoying my time with Yorkshire Water and look forward to seeing this year's candidates at the assessments centre.
