May 2012

Hi Everyone,

I finished my placement in the End User Support team towards the end of March, which provided me with an in depth understanding of the 2nd line support of what Service Management are all about and how they largely contribute towards supporting and maintaining the IT services within the company.
Not only did this placement allow me to build and configure various devices, but it also allowed me to network with several other areas of the business, suppliers and introduce new processes that will help the teams going forward.

Since the beginning of April, I joined the Client Application Services team in Infrastructure for a 6 month placement.

I am currently working on two of the Top10 IT projects in the company.   My current role of Business Analyst for the PABX telephony system involves leading and managing the Business Readiness team to ensure the roll out of the new technology and equipment goes as smoothly as possible.

Although, the role can be very demanding at times, it has been a fantastic experience so far with plenty of support/help available at hand.

The other project I am also working on is the Office 2010 file conversion, where a pilot is currently being carried out to assess file conversion in a particular area of the business and document this for roll out at other sites/teams.

Overall, there has been a good mixture of areas to get involved in with some real responsibility.

That's all for now!  See you next time

grad pic - Namita.jpgHi, I'm Namita Mistry and welcome to my blog.

Although I have already worked for YW for the past few years, I've only recently joined the Yorkshire Water IT Graduate Scheme. I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2004 with a degree in Business Management and joined the YW Supply Chain team in 2006 as a Trainee Buyer working my way up to Buyer within 2 years of joining. Having worked for the company for the past 5 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed the YW culture, values and development opportunities that have been made available to me. My decision to join the IT Grad scheme came from my experience in working on a number of Telecoms contracts within Supply Chain, being the business sponsor for the new Procurement system and passion to further develop my career within a field that I thoroughly enjoy working within.

So, what have I been up to? It's now been 3 weeks since I joined the scheme and my first 3 month placement is within the IT Service Desk team.

This team are at the forefront of the successful running of the business especially when it comes to technology and ensuring everything is running smoothly across the business.

So far I have shadowed my team buddy, learnt about common first fixes/issues, Queue busted in busy periods and am now an active member of the team taking phone calls from all around the business.

I have found that this is the ideal first placement to build a quality foundation and gain a better understanding of the business, the technology in place and the common issues and challenges faced by the business.

In the coming weeks I will be working on improving my knowledge of the Service Desk, continue to be an active member of the team resolving day to day issues, be included on the team rota to work a variety of shift patterns and work towards achieving my priorities for the quarter.

With all the support (line manager, supervisor, mentor, sponsoring manager and buddy) available to me, I am really looking forward to progressing within my placement, further developing key skills and really making a difference through my contribution.

Will keep you posted on how I get on. Watch this space?

January 2012

Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!

Since my last placement on the IT Service Desk, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first placement and learnt and developed immensely.   It has been very challenging at times where planning and organising has been key to managing my time effectively.  This has helped me learn and carry out my day job as well as work on my priorities consistently.

During this placement, the support network has been one thing that has really stood out for me with everyone encouraging you to do really well and progress being assessed with Line Managers, Sponsoring Managers and Mentors on a regular basis.

In this quarter, I have introduced a few new initiatives that will help the IT Service Desk improve the quality of calls that are logged and create more awareness of site locations.  I've also had the opportunity to network and go out into the business to roll out the password reset manager tool covering over a hundred colleagues at 2 Yorkshire Water sites.

Overall, it has been a fantastic placement.  I have learnt so much in such a short space of time and feel I have gained a good understanding of the part the Service Desk play within Yorkshire Water.

Since the beginning of January, I have now started my second placement in End User Support.  This is where I will be learning how to build and configure Laptops, Desktops, Tough book's and Blackberry's.  I will also be on second line support to fix desktop related calls and develop a further understanding on how YW assets and devices work.

That's all for now, watch out for my next blog update.
