Emma Fairhurst
IT Service Desk Supervisor
Having joined the company 3 years ago, I have been the IT Service Desk Supervisor for 12 months now and I am loving the challenges it brings. I look after the IT Service Desk which is a team of 7 who have to deal with working in an incredibly reactive environment whilst delivering world class customer service.
The IT Graduate scheme offers a range of different placements over 2 years that give you real responsibilities early on. After completing my degree in Computer Science, I knew that I wanted to work in IT but I wasn't sure what role would suit me best - the IT Graduate Scheme gave me the opportunity to try and experience a range of roles.
I joined Yorkshire Water fresh out of university and I have no doubt that I would not have progressed to being a manager in IT after only two years if I hadn't been in this fantastic environment.
Whilst on the Graduate Scheme I managed 2 projects, coordinated the Business Planning process and consulted senior managers within IT and right across the Business to develop a Mobile IT Strategy.
I really enjoy the people development, coaching the individuals in my team to progress in their current roles and their long term careers. Yorkshire Water really is a great place to work in my opinion - with some enthusiasm and drive to succeed - you will be greatly rewarded.
Besides my main role, I also manage to tie-in part of my hobby for Yorkshire Water. I am Lifeguard and qualified Lifesaving Trainer-Assessor, so as well as being a First Aider for the company, this year I am training some Community Life Support sessions as part of the European Health and Safety week!
I also do quite a bit of work with the British Computer Society, currently being the Young Professionals Group Representative for West Yorkshire. One of the great things about Yorkshire Water is our commitment to the community, so I get lots of support with the BCS work that I do.
